01Overview

Is Azle, Texas a good place to live?

For buyers who want more house or land for the money within half an hour of downtown Fort Worth, Azle is worth a look. Zillow’s typical home value is about $332,000, Eagle Mountain Lake is on the east side of town, and the Parker County side offers larger homesites. The trade-offs are a total tax rate around 2.17% in city limits, a C (78) rating for Azle ISD in 2025 and an SH-199 commute for most jobs.

Azle traces its start to 1846, when a young doctor, James Azle Steward, settled in a log cabin near Ash Creek. The first post office opened in 1881 under the name O’Bar, and in 1883 Steward asked for it to be renamed Azle and donated land for the townsite. Farming and dairies carried the economy until State Highway 34, now SH-199, reached town from Fort Worth in the 1930s.

The Census Bureau estimates Azle grew from about 13,350 residents in 2020 to 15,365 in July 2025. About 12,000 live on the Tarrant County side and about 3,300 in Parker County, where the population rose by roughly a third over the same five years.

Housing ranges from older in-town ranch homes near the schools to lake-area subdivisions near Eagle Mountain Lake and larger homesites on the Parker County side. Many “Azle” addresses sit outside city limits, so the tax bill, utilities and even the school district can change from one road to the next.

Local tip from Brandi

Azle straddles two counties and many Azle-mailing addresses are outside city limits. A home in Parker County, or in the unincorporated area, has a different tax bill and may use a co-op for electricity, so compare the actual tax certificate and utility providers, not just the price.
